All requests for exemptions and postponements must be in writing and received by the court, along with your juror questionnaire by the date specified in your letter from the court. No requests for exemptions or postponements can be handled by telephone.
NOTE: IF YOU FAIL TO APPEAR FOR JURY DUTY YOU COULD BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OF COURT.
FIRST DAY FACTS
You should report at 8:15 AM for orientation by the staff and instructions by a Justice of the Superior Court. There will be 90-120 other people coming in for the first time with you. You will be given some materials and directed to an assembly room on the second floor. The first selection will begin immediately after the judge’s instructions. Jurors are drawn at random from among all those reporting to serve on the cases set for trial that day. Jurors will be asked to return for additional "selection days."
Jurors should report at 8:45 AM on selection days. We will select several juries on those dates. Some jurors will not be selected and will be excused until the next selection day.
Most cases will last less than one week. Jurors serving on a case will be excused at its conclusion and instructed to report again on the next selection day. Because of the random nature of the selection process and the unpredictability of last minutes settlements, we unfortunately cannot advise you in advance of the selection day about if, when and how long you will be serving during the week.
NOTE: ON THE DAY OF JURY SELECTION, THE COURT WILL NOT ENTERTAIN ANY EMPLOYMENT RELATED REQUEST FOR EXCUSAL.
You can bring books, cards, games or other pastimes with you to the courthouse. Knitting needles will be confiscated at the metal detector entrance to the building and held until you leave. You are allowed to bring your cell phone but it can only be used when you are not in a courtroom.
Jury trials are conducted between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The jurors on a deliberating jury may be asked to decide whether to stay past 5:00 PM or not. There is one hour lunch break usually at 12:30 PM as well as a morning and afternoon break during trial.
If you need further information, please call 669-7410, extension 226.
