The Director of the New Hampshire Administrative Office of the Courts, Donald D. Goodnow, advises consumers to be on guard against a debt collection attempt that uses the name of the New Hampshire Supreme Court without authorization. Numerous consumers have reported that they received letters, purportedly from the law department of the "New Hampshire Supreme Court in Concord, New Hampshire," threatening that they would be arrested or subpoenaed unless an immediate payment was made. The letter directs recipients to call a telephone number with a New Hampshire area code to arrange for payment.
Mr. Goodnow warns consumers that the letter was not sent by the Supreme Court. The telephone number provided is not a telephone number for the Supreme Court. Consumers receiving such letters are warned to be suspicious of such letters or of any requests for money to be wired.
Consumers who have questions or complaints, or need additional information, should contact the Consumer Protection Office of the Attorney General's Office at www.doj.nh.gov/consumer or call the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-888-468-4454 (toll free).
