Every year to help celebrate Constitution Day, seven New Hampshire newspapers, and the New Hampshire Supreme Court, join together to sponsor an annual "Constitution Day Essay Contest" for grades 5-12 on a topic related to the US Constitution. The finalists for the 2009 contest were brought to the Supreme Court in Concord to read their essays and participate in the award ceremony.
2009 Essay Question
Many schools have restrictions on the types of messages and pictures that can be on t-shirts worn by students. The First Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees free speech for all citizens, but the courts have ruled that students have limited free speech rights when they are in a school building.
In your opinion, when should a school be allowed to ban t-shirts that have certain kinds of messages and pictures on them? Use examples.
