CaseLines Hearings – Tips for Counsel and Self-represented Parties

You’ve received an email from CaseLines advising you to upload documents for your upcoming trial or hearing into CaseLines. What now? Below are tips to help you work with CaseLines.

Pre-Hearing Uploading and Preparation

Tip 1 – Register and bookmark CaseLines

The first step will be to register as a CaseLines user and bookmark the CaseLines (https://nhecourt.caselines.com) website. Click on the link in the email directing you to CaseLines and fill in the required information on the registration page. You can also register in advance by visiting the CaseLines site and clicking on “Register” at the top right corner. You may also want to bookmark this website so that you return to the New Hampshire version of CaseLines and not another jurisdiction.

Tip 2 – When to Upload

When prompted in your Hearing Notice or after receiving a CaseLines invitation from the court, it is recommended to upload your exhibits into CaseLines at least five business days before your court date (or later IF permitted by the applicable rules).

Important: Uploading into CaseLines is mandatory. Material that is not uploaded into CaseLines will likely not be accepted.

Tip 3 – Invite other lawyers and legal assistants

Lawyers can provide other professionals access to their cases in CaseLines. You can do so by locating the case (found on your View Case List screen) and selecting Update Case. Next, click on the People tab found in the case file and then on Invite New Participant. Enter the participant’s email address and select the bundles you would like to provide them access to (e.g., the Prosecutor/Defense; Plaintiff/Defendant bundles). Verify the Send Advisory Invitation Email option is checked.  Once you click Invite, an automated CaseLines email will be sent to the person containing a link to the case.

If you are a self-represented litigant and would like to grant another person access to your CaseLines file, you will need to ask the court to grant the access. Please contact the Information Center to connect you to the court.

Tip 4 – Name and number your exhibits

  • After uploading into CaseLines, save your exhibit using the following suggested file naming convention in the Update All Documents screen. The first two documents in the section will automatically be in edit mode. Click Edit to change subsequent documentsDocument Number: Letter indicating your party in the order you would like them to appear (Ex: D01, D02, etc. Please note: This field is only used to indicate the order of exhibits, not to pre-mark. An additional zero is added to the number when over ten or more exhibits, two zeros if more than one hundred.
  • Document Title: Use this field to pre-mark your exhibits. Include the suggested exhibit number or letter, as applicable and an exhibit descriptor (e.g., Surveillance Video, 911 Call, Medical Record, Deed, etc.) Example: A witness statement submitted by Plaintiff should be named: Defense Ex A - Witness Statement

Document names that do not follow this protocol could cause confusion and create unnecessary delays.

Tip 5 – Upload documents individually to the appropriate section

After accessing your case in CaseLines, you will see a list of event bundles (subfolders) in your case. Before each evidentiary hearing, staff will label and provide you with access to the bundle for the hearing. For example, if a suppression hearing has been scheduled, staff will provide you with access to the suppression hearing bundle. You will always have access to your private sections (Prosecutor/Defense). Upload your documents into the hearing section if you intend on using the file at the hearing. This makes it easy for the judge to review the correct documents before the upcoming hearing.

To upload documents, click on the “Sections” tab in the case file, find your designated section and select “Upload Files”.

Upload each exhibit separately. Do not combine multiple exhibits into a single file. This will ensure that all of your files are organized and easily accessible for your hearing. Each file will be listed in the index found on the left-hand of the “Review” screen.

Tip 6 – Use hyperlinks!

Hyperlinks that you have included within a single Word or PDF document will still be available after the document has been uploaded to CaseLines. We encourage the use of hyperlinks, particularly with lengthy documents. All internal links (pointing to pages of the same document) in a bookmarked PDF will be retained when uploading, but the thumbnails you see down the left-hand side of the PDF viewer will not be brought over in the document upload. Any document with a bookmarked table of contents or index as part of the document (e.g. first page) which points to other areas in the same document will also work.

If you want to hyperlink two separate documents, you can do so using the CaseLines hyperlink feature. Click on the “Index” tab in the case file, find the document you wish to hyperlink and click on “View”. While in the View screen, click on the hyperlink button to add where needed.

Tip 7 – Navigate bundles

You will receive access to the Prosecutor/Defense section (your parties’ private section) and hearing section (i.e., Motion to Suppress) (shared with all parties in the case). You will receive access to more sections if other hearings are scheduled and created through CaseLines. Note: access to hearing sections for prior hearings will be removed after the event concludes.

You can navigate through your bundles on the Review screen by clicking the Change link at the top of the Index and selecting the appropriate bundle from the pop-up window.

Tip 8 – Refer the hearing participants to a specific page of a document

One way to direct a judge, the jury, or a witness to a specific page of a document is to open the document in CaseLines, click on Find at the top of the screen, and then click on Direct Others to Page. The resulting clickable message sent to all other parties will direct them to the same page.

Tip 9 – Use presenter mode to assist in your presentation during the hearing

You can use presenter mode to assist other participants in following your presentation during the hearing. This allows you to display specific pages and areas of a document on CaseLines for all participants.

To use this feature, click on the Review tab, then select Present and click Start Presentation to allow you to become the presenter. A red border will appear around the review pane, indicating that you are in presenter mode. Ask other participants to click on the Present tab and then click Follow Presenter and choose your name. You will be able to see who’s following you by the list of names displayed at the top of the screen.

Tip 10 – Return to the last viewed page of a document previously opened

If you have been moving between documents in CaseLines and want to return to the last viewed page, click on “Find” at the top of the screen to make additional feature buttons appear, and then click on “Show the Previous Page.”

Tip 11 – View more than one exhibit on your screen

You can open multiple documents in CaseLines by clicking “View” at the top of the screen to make additional feature buttons appear and then clicking on “Open in New Tab.” This will open another tab in your browser that will allow you to view the documents. You can also open two documents side by side on CaseLines by clicking on the Dual Panes Icon in the top right corner of your reading window (i.e., small overlapping rectangles). This will open a second reading pane so that you can read two documents side by side.
